This resource guide to mutual aid or support resources was developed by Linda and Ernie Kurtz and is updated on a monthly basis. It includes information about Group-Based Mutual Support Resources and Internet-Based Mutual Support Resources. Many of these groups offer both face-to-face meetings and some form of online participation. We list them according to their historical origin and the extent of their focus on alcoholism/drug addiction or other, often concurrent, problems.

Please, as you begin to draw from the information in this section, see About Mutual Support, Encouraging Local Group Development, and References for more information about Mutual Support or Aid. If you are working with people in recovery from addiction to alcohol or other drugs, you will also be interested in checking out For Professionals.

There are many new mutual support groups emerging around the country. So that you can find out more about them, we've added a new section Potentially Emerging New Mutual Help Resources. It lists some of the new groups that have been called to our attention. The groups are usually locally-based, and we usually do not have direct information on them beyond that which appears here. If you have any information about "larger than local" groups, please contact us. Thank you.

Many local newspapers (and their web sites) provide regular listings of support group meetings in their community. Several of our "Potentially Emerging New Mutual Help Resources" are drawn from such sources. If your local newspaper doesn't provide this service, you can meet with the editors and ask them to provide the information. If your area has a particularly good example, please write and tell us about it.

A recent newspaper article reported on how many are using web sites and online resources to find mutual support.
