Preparation is often the key to succeeding in anything we pursue, including relapse prevention. We know that relapse is often part of recovery. Although not everyone relapses, those that do relapse can mitigate the destruction with a well constructed and prepared relapse prevention plan. Relapse prevention planning can mean the difference between a short term relapse with minimal consequences, and losing everything in a long term bout with your addiction.
Many people mistakenly believe that if they relapse, they have no choice but to keep using addictively until they lose everything, "hit bottom", and have had enough. That's not true.
The trouble is there's no such thing as "enough," no matter how long your relapse lasts. And it"s harder to recover from a long relapse than a short one. This is because a long relapse usually does more damage to your body, brain, emotions, relationships, finances, and work. It's much better to stop a relapse quickly, before you have done serious or irreversible damage. If you relapse, it's best to get help while you still have hope, dignity, and friends you haven't pushed away.
