| What's New in CARF Behavioral Health Standards 2006-7 |

In an ongoing effort to keep current with the field and support best practices, CARF reviews and makes changes to selected areas of their standards on an annual basis. Organizations currently accredited are expected to keep up with these changes and institute new policies, procedures and practices as appropriate. What follows is an overview of the changes for the upcoming standards year: July 2006-June 2007. This article is not intended to be a substitute for purchasing and using a manual to update an organization's standards conformance, but rather some general information about what areas are affected.
In a wide-ranging view, the Business Practice standards have undergone few changes, other than the addition of a voluntary Criterion J., titled Governance. This section may be applied at the discretion of the organization to legal governing entities, such as Boards of Directors. In some cases there may be a legal or other mandate that requires the application of these standards. It is not applied to advisory or community relations boards. If chosen, the standards include items like developing policies and procedures for various Board functions, as well as Board and Executive evaluation.
