Around February of 2004, before 12StepRadio ever existed, Bill Z. and Gracie H. were talking on the phone (he's in California and she's in Tennessee) about Bill's vision of one day being able to walk into a music store and having an entire section dedicated to recovery music. (Gracie reminded him that it wasn't all that long ago when bookstores didn't have "recovery" sections.) A few days later, Gracie fired off an E-mail to Bill. It went something like this, "Why don't you start an Internet radio station that plays recovery music?" Bill went online and found that the url www.12stepradio.com was available and registered it.
The next couple of months were a whirlwind of activity. Bill spent considerable time researching how to go about setting up an Internet radio station, searching for recovery music, and learning how to pay royalties to legally play other people's music on a radio station. Office space and computers were committed to the project. Gracie was helping all along the way.
One day Bill remembered that his friend of 12 years, Mickey S., who used to attend step study meetings in Bill's garage, had something to do with radio. Bill called Mickey and asked him to remind him what he had to do with radio. Mickey said, "Well, I got my first job in a radio station when I was 15. I majored in Electrical Engineering in college and after graduating I worked as a disk jockey and co-hosted a 3 hour a week Recovery Radio program. Now I run an Internet Radio station out of my house. Why do you ask?" Talk about a God shot!
Needless to say, Mickey and Bill got together shortly thereafter. In a few days of intense activity, the software, computers, playlists, sweepers, audio cards, servers, and all the other high-tech gizmos necessary were assembled and hooked up... mostly by Mickey.
In the meantime it became apparent that the actual web site had to be created. The basic outline was created by Gracie and Bill. The actual web site development started and with an occasional piece of much needed magic from a couple of highly skilled techies from Bill's office the site became a reality.
After many hours of activity, excitement, temporary setbacks, disappointment, and victories by a dedicated team of unlikely comrades, and constant support from a higher power, 12StepRadio.com went live on April 17, 2004, at 4:49 PM
What a trip! And it's only the beginning.
