According to figures recently released by SAMHSA from the 2004-2005 National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH), men outpace women in all categories of excessive drinking. Men are still twice as likely as women (10.5 percent versus 5.1 percent) to meet criteria for alcohol abuse and addiction as defined by the DSM-IV. Men also are more likely to binge drink. The report found that 10.5 percent of men were classified as heavy drinkers compared to 3.3 percent of women. Overall, almost 45 percent of heavy drinkers ages 12 and older met the criteria for alcohol dependence or abuse.
