Cognitive Behavioral Therapy Appears More Effective Than Sleep Medication For Treating Insomnia

Patients with insomnia who implemented cognitive behavioral therapy interventions such as relaxation techniques had greater improvement in their sleep than patients who received the sleep medication zopiclone, according to a study in the June 28 2006 issue of JAMA. Recognition of emotional facial expressions ( EFEs) is a key form of non-verbal communication that has a huge influence on an individual's social-interaction skills. Alcoholics tend to have impaired EFE decoding abilities. A new study has found that not only do EFE decoding deficits continue despite three months of abstinence, but those individuals with the worst deficits also had the worst prognosis for treatment success.

When you are presenting in front of an audience, you are performing as an actor is on stage. How you are being perceived is very important. Dress appropriately for the occasion. Be solemn if your topic is serious. Present the desired image to your audience. Look pleasant, enthusiastic, confident, proud, but not arrogant. Remain calm. Appear relaxed, even if you feel nervous. Speak slowly, enunciate clearly, and show appropriate emotion and feeling relating to your topic.

My first response to The Basics was to the mere size of it. It is clear why there are two volumes, and if the adage is true that "more is better," then this 1,200-page curriculum for service providers working with the dually diagnosed has to be fantastic. And after figuring out how one would use The Basics, I would tend to agree.
