Pain in Opioid-Addicted Patients Entering Addiction Treatment

Pain and addiction share some common physiologic pathways in the brain, especially those involving opioids, and each may affect the other. That is, the presence of pain may influence the development and course of opioid addiction, and vice versa. This article explores a variety of issues contributing to pain that can complicate addiction treatment.

Better detection and treatment of alcohol use in elderly people is needed

One primary care study identified 10% of older patients as having current evidence of alcoholism, yet fewer than half of these patients had documentation of alcohol misuse in their medical records. Elderly people may be less likely to disclose a history of excessive alcohol intake, and the problem is compounded by the fact that healthcare workers have a lower degree of suspicion when assessing older people. Furthermore, healthcare workers are less likely to refer elderly people for specialist treatment.
